چکیده

The statistical analysis of discrete data has been the subject of extensive statistical research dating back to the work of Pearson. In this survey we review some recently developed methods for testing hypotheses about high-dimensional multinomials. Traditional tests like the χ-test and the likelihood ratio test can have poor power in the high-dimensional setting. Much of the research in this area has focused on finding tests with asymptotically Normal limits and developing (stringent) conditions under which tests have Normal limits. We argue that this perspective suffers from a significant deficiency: it can exclude many high-dimensional cases when — despite having non-Normal null distributions — carefully designed tests can have high power. Finally, we illustrate that taking a minimax perspective and considering refinements of this perspective can lead naturally to powerful and practical tests.

Hypothesis Testing For Densities and High-Dimensional Multinomials: Sharp Local Minimax Rates

We consider the goodness-of-fit testing problem of distinguishing whether the data are drawn from a specified distribution, versus a composite alternative separated from the null in the total variation metric. In the discrete case, we consider goodness-of-fit testing when the null distribution has a possibly growing or unbounded number of categories. In the continuous case, we consider testing ...

Testing for Stochastic Non- Linearity in the Rational Expectations Permanent Income Hypothesis

The Rational Expectations Permanent Income Hypothesis implies that consumption follows a martingale. However, most empirical tests have rejected the hypothesis. Those empirical tests are based on linear models. If the data generating process is non-linear, conventional tests may not assess some of the randomness properly. As a result, inference based on conventional tests of linear models can b...

Testing the Convergence Clubs Hypothesis among MENA Countries

T his paper is to study the convergence of per capita income. Convergence clubs hypothesis is one of the forms of convergence hypotheses, implying that countries with the same initial level of economic development, technology, and government policies, tend to be similar in per capita income and thus have a tendency to cluster around a small number of poles. In order to test the hypot...

Global Testing and Large-Scale Multiple Testing for High-Dimensional Covariance Structures

Driven by a wide range of contemporary applications, statistical inference for covariance structures has been an active area of current research in high-dimensional statistics. This paper provides a selective survey of some recent developments in hypothesis testing for high-dimensional covariance structures, including global testing for the overall pattern of the covariance structures and simul...

A New Method for Sperm Detection in Infertility Cure: Hypothesis Testing Based on Fuzzy Entropy Decision

In this paper, a new method is introduced for sperm detection in microscopic images for infertility treatment. In this method, firstly a hypothesis testing function is defined to separate sperms from plasma, non-sperm semen particles and noise. Then, some primary candidates are selected for sperms by watershed-based segmentation algorithm. Finally, candidates are either confirmed or rejected us...
